2. Choose the amplifier that matches your telephone and the way you work.
The Multi-Purpose Amplifier (HS100A) works with most phones that have a modular handset connector. It features a sliding volume control, a headset/handset switch, a mute switch, and a built-in headset stand.

The Two-Prong Carbon Amplifier (HS101A) is designed for phones that have a two-prong headset port. It has a three-position volume control that locks your volume preference in place.

The 2.4-GHz Wireless Remote Unit with Hookset (HS300A) includes a base unit, a remote unit, and a hookswitch. Choose any headset style to go with it. Spread-Sprectrum technology means no interference. Plus you can roam up to 200 feet from the base station.

A human with keen hearing can hear sounds within a range of about 20 Hz to 20 KHz. But most human speech is centered in the 1000 Hz range, so most old-fashioned analog telephone networks provided audio bandwidth only in this range. This range transmits most voice information but can fail to register voice subtleties and inflections.

Because these older analog phone systems had such a narrow bandwidth, headset manufacturers built their products to operate only in those particular frequencies.

When digital networks and fiber optic connections came into use, however, they provided a much wider bandwidth for voice transmission. This led to a corresponding increase in headset sound quality.

Today, quality headsets take advantage of increased network bandwidth and typically can reproduce sounds in the 300 Hz to 3500 Hz range. This makes voices far easier to understand and enables you to pick up all the nuances and inflections of your caller’s voice.

Proper microphone positioning is especially important to take advantage of noise canceling microphones, which reject background noise.

For optimum performance, position the microphone one finger width away from your lower lip.

The difference between consumer- and commercial-grade phone-line managers is more than just a matter of size. The number of ports, phone lines, and connected communications equipment possible with commercial-grade devices is larger—as many as 24 devices on 8 lines!

But flexibility is the key factor. The extra features, like programmability and built-in surge protection, set commercial line managers apart. Some models feature connections for three devices to each phone line, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Others can provide shared connections for an entire business, saving thousands of dollars per year.

And data-collection transmissions can also be run on the same lines used for voice calls, so remote business sites can transmit information for centralized data collection over one phone line—no dedicated line necessary.

A headset featuring a flexible, swing-away microphone boom is easy to adjust—all you need to do is bend the boom until the microphone is in the correct position. Plus, you can easily swing the microphone out of your way if you wish to take a sip of coffee or soda while you’re on the phone.

Hypercardioid describes a type of directional microphone which picks up sounds predominently from a 90- to 120-degree arc in front of it. The pickup pattern of a hypercardioid microphone is a narrow front lobe that’s the shape of an inverted heart and a small rear lobe.
