With extra-long runtime, the APC Smart-UPS XL (Rackmount) from Black Box gives you the ability to keep your important rackmount servers and other powered equipment operating during extended outages.

The Smart-UPS XL gives you network-grade power and 3000-VA output power capacity, which ensures reliable runtime for business applications that require continual uptime. The Smart-UPS XL does this by providing continuous power from its internal battery—as well as extra battery packs—until the utility line returns to a safe level after an outage. Its alarm sounds periodic beeps to let you know when the Smart-UPS XL is running on battery power.

The Smart-UPS XL also prevents blackouts, brownouts, sags, and surges from reaching your valuable equipment while also filtering out smaller line fluctuations. It isolates equipment from large disturbances by internally disconnecting from the utility line. EMI/RFI filtering, in particular, prevents electrical noise from affecting computer operation or causing data glitches.

To quickly recover from UPS overload events, the system features resettable circuit breakers. When utility power is restored, the UPS automatically restarts loads and restarts connected equipment.

It’s also cold-start capable, meaning that you can generate temporary power from the UPS to start and run equipment during a blackout. When there’s no utility power and the UPS is off, the cold start feature switches the Smart-UPS XL and connected equipment to battery power.

The UPS also does the job when it detects a line-voltage distortion, switching to battery operation to protect the connected equipment.

Availability as needed.
Because the Smart-UPS XL features scalable runtime, you can add additional time to meet power needs now and in the future. To connect optional external battery packs, just plug them into the rear-panel battery pack connector.

And by using the Smart-UPS XL’s intelligent battery-charging features, you can maximize battery performance and extend their life. Provide higher availability as needed using its Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which enables you to boost or trim availability by correcting low- and high-voltage conditions without using a battery. This way, you save your battery time for major power disturbances.

What’s more, because the Smart-UPS XL performs a periodic test, you’ll readily know when the batteries are running low and need to be replaced or are accidentally disconnected. The UPS performs this self-test automatically when turned on and every two weeks thereafter. You can also test the system manually with a press of a button.

Plus, because the system uses plug-and-play batteries, you can swap in a new one without any effect on the UPS and connected equipment during replacement.

Advanced management capabilities.
Monitoring and controlling the Smart-UPS XL is extremely easy with the included PowerChute® software, which enables you to safely shut down your system from a remote workstation. Easy to install and use, the software also helps you precisely control the UPS and perform important diagnostic functions. Simply connect a console and manage the UPS via its serial port (using the supplied APC cable only).

The Smart-UPS XL is also compatible with APC InfraStruXure Manager, an on-demand architecture that enables you to centrally manage fully integrated components that are in a wiring closet or data center (for details on how to specify InfraStruXure software, modules, and other components, contact our FREE Tech Support).

You can also quickly monitor and verify the Smart-UPS XL’s operation by glancing at the front panel. An LED illuminates when the UPS is supplying utility power to the connected equipment, and the unit’s five-LED display shows the percentage of available power used by the connected equipment. If three LEDs are lit, for example, the connected load is drawing between 50% and 67% of the UPS capacity. If you should happen to have an overload condition, the UPS emits a sustained alarm tone and its “Overload” LED illuminates to let you know.

In addition, a Site Wiring Fault LED lights up when it detects that the UPS is connected to an improperly wired power outlet, and predictive failure notification provides early-warning fault analysis to let you know when a component should be replaced.

Additional receptacles and interfaces available.
The Smart-UPS XL features nine NEMA 5-15R receptacles, a serial RS-232 port, and a battery pack connector for adding extra packs. It also includes:

Two NEMA 5-20R receptacles for connecting the larger plugs of higher power servers and switches.

A USB port

An EPO (emergency power off) port, which gives you a way to de-energize connected equipment from a remote location.

A SmartSlot interface, which enables you to customize your Smart-UPS XL by adding a host of available APC Network Management Cards.

The cards provide standards-based monitoring, configuration, and event handling for the UPS, and enable you to use the PowerChute software to remotely shut down a system over a 10/100BASE-T network. Cards are available for monitoring temperature and humidity, managing a UPS via a modem—even if the network is down—and monitoring critical alarms through dry-contact interfaces.
