The Past

  • 1976 — A little company called Expandor, Inc. opens for business, selling connectivity devices—the little black boxes—that clients need to connect their primary data communications products.
  • 1977 — The first BLACK BOX® Catalog rolls off the presses. It's six pages, contains nine products, and generates $170,000 in sales.
  • 1978 — Product requests come in from around the world. The Company establishes the first of many international partnerships in Canada.
  • 1982 — The Company changes its name to Black Box because the majority of customers call the company by its catalog name.
  • 1982 — In recognition of outstanding export trade, Black Box earns the U.S. President's "E Award."
  • 1987 — In recognition of continued outstanding export trade, Black Box earns the U.S. President's "E-Star Award."
  • 1994 — Black Box goes on-line and within the first two weeks, visitors from 36 companies find the site.
  • 1994 — The Company's size, plans for growth, and financial stability prompt Black Box to go public.
  • 1998 — For the first time, Black Box offers on-site data network infrastructure services in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Later that year, Black Box expands its on-site offerings to Florida.
  • 1999 — The number of talented employees at Black Box hits 1000.
  • 1999 — Black Box begins offering network infrastructure services in the United Kingdom. Soon thereafter, services expand throughout Europe and in the Pacific Rim.
  • 1999 — Black Box is named one of the "200 Best Small Companies in America" by Forbes magazine.
  • 1999 — A new state-of-the-art distribution center opens at the Company's headquarters in Lawrence, PA.
  • 2000 — On-site capabilities expand to include telephony services.
  • 2001 — The BLACK BOX® Catalog grows to 1488 pages.
  • 2002 — BusinessWeek magazine recognizes Black Box as one of the "Best 100 Small Companies."
  • 2003 — The number of Team Members hits 3000.
  • 2004 — Black Box wins Catalog of the Year at the Multichannel Merchant awards.
  • 2005 — Black Box wins Catalog of the Year at the Multichannel Merchant awards, again.
  • 2005 — The product mix grows and the Company offers 118,000 products in its catalogs and on its Web site.
  • 2005 — With the acquisition of Minnesota-based Norstan, Inc., Black Box greatly expands its voice services.
  • 2006 — Black Box again expands its voice services with the acquisition of the USA Commercial and Government, and Canadian Operations of NextiraOne, LLC and Nu-Vision. Voice services account for more than 40% of Black Box business.
  • 2007 — A new 24/7/365 Technical Support Call Center opens in Murfreesboro, TN.
  • 2007 — Black Box wins Catalog of the Year at the Multichannel Merchant awards for an unprecedented third time in four years!
  • 2007 — For the first time, Black Box passes the $1 billion mark in revenue.
  • 2007 — The number of Black Box Team Members approaches 4500.
  • 2007 — Voice services now account for 60% of Black Box business.

  • Today, Black Box is a leading provider of voice and data network infrastructure services and products. The Company serves 175,000 clients from 187 offices in 141 countries, including its headquarters in scenic Lawrence, PA, 20 miles south of Pittsburgh
